Costs for a 3 month road trip around the USA?
A friend and myself are going on a 3 month road trip round the US next summer (we’re form England), from the beginning of May. We’ll be 19 at the time, and I know most American places won’t rent out to under 25′s, so we’re thinking of buying a cheap car instead. Basically, we’re wondering how much people think that would cost us, taking into consideration we would be camping a lot, and trying not to spend too much – I know gas is a lot! Is there anything that went really wrong on any road trips you’ve done? And how much do you think this would cost – we’re aiming to go from NY to San Francisco, then to Boston/Philadelphia, going across the Northern states on the way West, and looping back along the Southern states -any feedback would be great! Thanks so much
It’s basically impossible to come up with costs because “around the USA” is supremely vague. Costs of just about everything vary by region, often greatly. The only way to come up with even a rough figure would be to have a better idea of your intended route. NYC, SF, Bos and Phil will be insanely expensive compared to much of the midwest. In addition, keep a few things in mind, some of which you are probably already aware. The drinking age in the US is 21. Everywhere. You can certainly buy a car but you won’t be able to insure it without a permanent address in the US so you won’t actually be able to drive it. Leasing might be an option but at 19 could get expensive. Mileage on a lease might cost you a chunk of change too. As tourists you can not legally work. I don’t mean to imply that is in your plan, it does not seem to be, but often people who plan trips such as yours want to pick up a few bucks to help defer the cost. It’s illegal, I’m just pointing it out. Be aware of the massive distances you intend to cover. It’s A LOT of driving. Definitely worth it but realize what you are getting yourself into. Should you do it, I am confident you will have a stellar time.
