In the remote Tiwi islands, north of Darwin, Great Southern Plantations manages a forestry project which is bringing unique benefits to the islands’ traditional land owners.
Working in partnership with the Tiwi people, Great Southern is developing a sustainable forestry industry on the islands, with the establishment of large-scale hardwood plantations.
The project is delivering a number of significant economic and social benefits to the Tiwi people. Great Southern is the largest private sector employer of Tiwi Islanders, with approximately 25 now on the company’s payroll, the majority of whom are receiving training as part of an apprenticeship program. In addition, a number of other Tiwi businesses and local contractors are directly and indirectly benefiting from the project, which is also significantly improving infrastructure on the islands.
Based on the success of its partnerships with indigenous communities to date, the company is exploring ways in which it can create more opportunities for indigenous people in the other regions in which it operates.
